Conrad Urges Meghalaya Workforce to Consider Overseas Job Opportunities

Shillong, August 16: Meghalaya’s Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, highlighted the limited scope of government jobs and encouraged the state’s workforce to explore entrepreneurial avenues during a speech at the Rozger Mela hosted by NEHU in Shillong.

Conrad emphasized that the state government is dedicated to fostering opportunities for the youth through entrepreneurship, given the constraints of government-sector positions. He outlined a multifaceted strategy to address the employment challenge, recognizing the consistent scarcity of government and agency jobs, which typically amount to 1200-1500 positions per year across various sectors, departments, divisions, and districts.

While acknowledging some fluctuations, Conrad stressed that the annual average of around 1200 job openings remains relatively constant. He underscored the necessity for a comprehensive approach to tackle this issue, noting that definitive solutions are elusive, and proactive measures are vital at different levels to address employment concerns effectively.

Recognizing the importance of skill enhancement and proficiency in foreign languages, the Chief Minister highlighted opportunities for the workforce from Meghalaya to explore employment options abroad, particularly in countries like China, Japan, Germany, the UK, and Australia.

Additionally, Conrad emphasized the government’s commitment to facilitating language learning and skill development, ensuring that these overseas opportunities are accessible and beneficial for the youth of the state.
