Meghalaya’s Chief Minister Vows to Resolve Assam Border Dispute
Shillong, August 15: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma of Meghalaya reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to finding a resolution to the longstanding border dispute with Assam.
During his address at the main Independence Day celebration held at Polo Grounds in Shillong, Sangma underscored the significance of the historic Memorandum of Understanding signed with Assam the previous year, signifying the initial step towards achieving a resolution to the border disagreement.
According to IANS reports, Sangma placed particular emphasis on the establishment of regional committees dedicated to addressing specific differences in various areas, including Langpih, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Desh Doomreah, Block 1 & Block 2, and Psiar-Khanduli.
Sangma noted encouraging advancements in the formal tripartite peace negotiations involving the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), as well as both central and state governments.
In addition, the Chief Minister unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at generating five lakh employment opportunities over the next five years. The focus will be on bolstering essential sectors of the economy such as agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, sericulture, and fisheries.
Meghalaya’s exceptional produce, including Lakadong turmeric and Khasi mandarins, have found their way into international markets, thereby contributing to improved remuneration for local farmers.
Sangma also highlighted the successful implementation of the FOCUS program, which extends support to rural households and producer groups. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of border trade and the state’s concerted efforts to enhance border infrastructure.
Furthermore, Meghalaya stands out with its well-funded Early Childhood Development Mission, which stands as a testament to the state’s holistic developmental aspirations.
